After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the states in eastern Europe were all beginning to feel the repercussions of the new politics in the Kremlin. Old dictators, propped up by the USSR, were no more invincible. The people wanted democracy and change. Still nothing was clear. Into this uncertainty and chaos, I drove down from Berlin in an old VW Passat to document the rapid changes taking place. The nights were long and tense, with a very limited budget, time running out.
